Many of the historical records of The University of Nottingham and its predecessor, University College, Nottingham, are available to researchers in the Reading Room at King's Meadow Campus.
The records relate particularly to the development of the University from the 1920s to the 1960s. Coverage of the early years following the opening of the College in 1881, and of the last 50 years is less comprehensive. The records include administrative files, accounts, correspondence, minutes, plans, student registers, newspaper cuttings and ephemera.
Printed material is also present in the University archives, but more complete series of publications such as the University Calendar, Annual Reports, departmental prospectuses and student publications are housed in a section within the East Midlands Special Collection.
An area which has grown particularly in recent years is a collection of photographs depicting the development of University buildings and student life. These items have been acquired both from official sources, and increasingly, from alumni and others associated with the University.
Papers of the Students' Union and various other student and staff societies are also held. They include minutes, correspondence, membership registers and photographs. The professional and personal papers of several former members of staff are also present in our collections, as well as lecture notes, personal papers and memorabilia relating to the time at Nottingham of former students. Many of these are classified as Personal papers rather than University archives.
There are some restrictions upon access to parts of the University holdings and further work is required upon the consolidation and cataloguing of the papers.
