Welcome to the Institute for Medieval Research

Welcome to the website for Nottingham's Institute for Medieval Research (previously Institute for Medieval Studies).

The Institute is one of the UK's leading centres for the study of the European Middle Ages. It was set up in 1988 to build links between researchers at Nottingham with interests in medieval cultures and to foster collaboration with scholars working elsewhere in the world.

The interdisciplinary nature of the Institute makes Nottingham an excellent place to carry out postgraduate research in medieval studies, whether at Masters, Doctoral or Post-Doctoral level.

Our well-known, refereed journal, Nottingham Medieval Studies has demonstrated a lasting commitment to research into the Middle Ages since its first publication in 1957. The journal has a B rating with the European Reference Index for the Humanities (ERIH).

The Institute arranges a series of conferences, lectures and seminars, and is affiliated to the Humanities Research Centre .
