Biography

Peter Wright was born in Vienna and educated in the UK. He took the BA and the BMus in composition at Oxford University and then worked in London as a freelance writer, composer and teacher before resuming full-time study (MA, PhD) at the University of Nottingham. Following an appointment at the University of Exeter (1987) he returned to Nottingham, as Lecturer (1988), Reader (2000) and Professor (2007).

His main research interests lie in English and continental music of the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance, with a particular focus on source study. Central to his work are the Trent codices, the most important surviving collection of early and mid-fifteenth-century polyphony, on which he has published a monograph (The Related Parts of Trent, Museo Provinicale d'Arte, MSS 87 (1374) and 92 (1379), Garland 1989) and several articles and has edited a set of international conference proceedings (I codici musicali trentini: nuove scoperte e nuovi orientamenti della ricerca, Trent 1996). He has contributed to many journals, including Early Music History, Plainsong & Medieval Music and Music & Letters (his article 'Paper Evidence and the Dating of Trent 91' was awarded the Westrup Prize in 1995), and collections of essays. He also works on the music of Michael Tippett.

Current Research

Peter Wright was director of a major research project, The Music Anthology of Hermann Pötzlinger (ca. 1415-1469), which was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (2004-7) and focused on one of the central sources of late medieval European polyphony, the so-called 'St Emmeram Codex'. He and his collaborator on the project, Ian Rumbold, co-authored the commentary to a new facsimile of the codex (Reichert Verlag 2006) and a monograph, Hermann Pötzlinger's Music Book: The St Emmeram Codex and Its Contexts (Boydell 2009; awarded the 2010 C. B. Oldman Prize). Current and forthcoming projects include a critical edition of fifteenth-century Mass music for the British Academy series Early English Church Music (whose committee he chairs) and studies of the the Aosta Codex (for which he was recently awarded a British Academy/Leverhulme Senior Research Fellowship) and the manuscript Trent 92-1. He has served on the Council of the Royal Musical Association (2001-4) and is a regular speaker at conferences and symposia in the UK and abroad.
