Nottingham has a strong reputation for engineering research. We are ranked 3rd for Research Power in Engineering in the UK government’s Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, with more than 98% of research of international quality, and 85% graded as 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent'.
We have a multidisciplinary approach, with a focus on practical, industry-led projects. Engineering researchers are based in dozens of different research groups, Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) and Institutes.

Our research strengths include composites, advanced and additive manufacturing, energy, aerospace, transport, healthcare technologies, and sustainability. We have one of the largest power electronics research groups and one of the largest additive manufacturing research groups in the world.
In 2012 we opened the Institute for Aerospace Technology (IAT) which continues to work on industry-facing research, with a portfolio of activities reaching £55million. It hosts the Marie Curie Innovative Doctoral Programme, focused on delivering a blueprint for tomorrow’s air transport.
Our Creative Energy Homes resource is a £1.9 million building development, where we work with leading firms to develop energy efficient technologies and sustainable housing solutions.

With a total research portfolio of approximately £160 million, our partners include Aston Martin, BAE Systems, Caterpillar, European Space Agency, Jaguar Land Rover, Ministry of Defence, NATO, Rolls Royce, and Siemens, as well as many others.
Our national and international collaborations bring together specialists from across the University, working with researchers in other leading universities, research institutions, industry partners and government departments, to develop novel solutions for challenging global issues, such as:
