Biography

I gained my PhD from the world-leading academic group in NMR spectroscopy-based metabonomics/metabolomics at Imperial College, headed by Professor Jeremy Nicholson. After this, I took the opportunity to move to the Netherlands where I worked as a post doctoral research fellow for Unilever Research and Development in Vlaardingen. In this position, I was responsible for the management of the URDV multidisciplinary metabolomics programme whose aim was to develop, implement and tailor 'metabolomic' methodology specifically for the requirements of Unilever projects and customers. Within this programme, state-of-the-art NMR spectroscopic technology, newly developed comprehensive chromatography methods and mass spectrometry were combined with advanced chemometric methodologies for analyzing biological samples, in order to provide an efficient procedure with which to correlate metabolic responses of consumers with the health effects of 'Functional Food' ingredients.

I later moved to the Netherlands' largest contract research organization, 'TNO Food and Nutrition' where I was employed as 'Project Leader Metabolomics' and managed and co-managed several large metabolomics projects for a diverse range of industries. I also carried out metabolomics research on a more fundamental scientific level in collaboration with academia (Leiden University) and thus during this time, I was fortunate enough to work with Professor Jan van der Greef, a pioneer in mass-spectrometry based metabolomics.

I was appointed as a Lecturer in the School of Pharmacy in September 2004 with the remit to establish NMR spectroscopy-based metabolomic methodology at the University.

Current Research

I am currently involved in collaborative projects with both academic and industrial partners in almost all sub-disciplines of metabolomics, including: study design [1]; development of novel metabolomic methodology [e.g. [2], [3 ]; biological sample preparation [e.g. [4], [5]; study of novel biofluids [e.g. [6]]; metabolite identification using multiple hyphenated techniques i.e. HPLC-NMR-MS [e.g. [7]]; use of metabolomics for disease biomarker discovery; study of subtle metabolic changes e.g. health benefits of nutraceuticals, functional foods and dietary supplements [[7-9], [10]] and study of metabolite interactions and dynamics. In addition to my research interests in metabolomics, I am also responsible for research applications of the 400 MHz NMR spectrometer in the School of Pharmacy.

Examples of current studies include a BBSRC-CASE studentship (Unilever Port Sunlight) to develop a comprehensive metabolomic toolbox for the analysis of apocrine sweat. This toolbox will include methodologies such as micro-volume NMR spectroscopy, nanospray liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (nano-LC-MS), and capillary electrophoresis-laser induced fluorescence (CE-LIF). I am primary supervisor for a further BBSRC-CASE studentship entitled the "Development of Methods that allow Chemical and Biological Interpretation of Plant Metabolomic Data to Determine Nutritional Benefits of Foods or Food Ingredients". This studentship is run in collaboration with Unilever Research in Vlaardingen and Professor Greg Tucker (School of Biosciences). I am also involved in several collaborations in the area of disease biomarker discovery, including: with Professor Dorothee Auer (Division of Academic Radiology, School of Medicine) in the area of Alzheimer's Disease research; Professor Fiona Broughton Pipkin (Deptartment of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, City Hospital) in the area of pregnancy and neonatal health and Mr. William Atiomo (Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Queens Medical Centre) in the area of biomarker discovery for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
