Research Associate, Faculty of Science
I studied Ba Economics at the University of Sheffield 2004-2007, and carried on at Sheffield to do my MSc in Economics and Health Economics 2007-2008. After finishing my MSc i moved to the University of Nottingham to work on the PINCER project within the School of Pharmacy. Since May 2009 i have also been working on the MCOP project at the University of Nottingham in connection with the school of age and rehabilitation.

PINCER project The PINCER project is a Pharmacist Led IT intervention for reducing prescribing errors in GP practices. Through introducing Pharmacists into GP practices to assist in prescribing known patient error groups this should help GP practices become more cost efficient in the long run. As the health economist on the project it was my job to collect and evaluate all resource use data from the GP practices for both the control and intervention practices. The project is currently in its evaluation stage and due to be complete summer of 2010.
MCOP study
The Medical Crises in Older People (MCOP) study is made up of 3 work streams with different patient groups, and different interventions, but focusing on one main aim: reducing medical crises in older people. The 3 work streams involve a number of sub groups within the elderly population such as patients with mental (i.e. dementia) and physical difficulties, as well as care home and community dwelling patients. Resource use data are collected for these patients from a number of health care services (i.e. Hospitals, GP practices, ambulance service, intermediate Care, social services and the health care trust), these patients are also asked a number of quality of life questionnaires such as the EQ-5D and the less familiar ICEcap measure. This project is due to finish in the summer of 2013.
I currently have a PhD bid in progress with the ESRC/MRC studentship to do a thesis on the theoretical history and application of preference based quality of life measures compared to using the capabilities approach to quality of life in health care interventions. This takes a look at how the UK uses a preference based quality of the life measure (i.e. EQ-5D) in health care evaluation and the historical development and reasoning behind this. This is compared to the historical development of Sen's capabilites approach and the recent development of the ICEcap measure. The evaluation of each measure has a specific view on its sensitivity to the elderly and uses data derived from the MCOP study. If the PhD bid is successful i will start my PhD in the summer of 2010.
