Stephen Mumford to play at Philosophers' Football Match

Stephen Mumford, Professor of Metaphysics and Head of School of Humanities, will be playing right back for the Greek side at this year's Philosophers' Football Match. The team Socrates Wanderers will be managed by Graham Taylor, the former England football manager. As well as a host of professional philosophers, a number of comedians, inlcluding Andy Hamilton, Arthur Smith, and Tony Hawkes, will be playing.

The Philosophy Shop organises, with  the full backing of the surviving Pythons, the tribute/replay of ‘The Philosophers' Football Match’ between 'Greeks' and 'Germans'. The Monty Python sketch depicted a spoof match between the two sides at the 1972 Munich Olympics. It starred John Cleese as Archimedes, Graham Chapman as Hegel, Michael Palin as Nietzsche, Terry Jones as Marx, Terry Gilliam as Kant, and German footballer Franz Beckenbauer was the only real, and somewhat bemused, player.

The game takes place  May 9 th at Wingate and Finchley FC, The Abraham Stadium, London.

Please visit www.philosophersfootball.com for more information about who is playing, how to buy tickets or lend your support for the campaign to get ‘reasoning’ - the fourth ‘R’ - into the curriculum.
