School/Public Outreach

The School of Physics & Astronomy is engaged in a wide range of activities designed to help get schools and the wider community involved in cutting-edge physics and astronomy. If you want to take part in any of these free programmes, or would like to develop some new activity with us, contact the School's Outreach Coordinator .

Current general programmes that we will run in 2010-2011 include:

  • Scientific talks and demonstrations to schools, astronomical societies, etc. These can be arranged within the University or we can come to you.
  • Yr 10 and Yr12 taster days. These will include mini lectures, demonstrations and lab work.
Please click on the link below for more details and contact information to book your place

  • Masterclasses : an opportunity for Year 12 and 13 students to learn about current advances in the subject, and to get hands-on experience in university laboratories.
  • Exploring Physics: we are hosting the 2012 Exploring Physics conference on 1/2 April which aims to motivate and inform students studying physics at both A and AS level with a blend of topics and speakers designed to offer an insight into modern physics. Click the Masterclasses link above for more information.
  • Trickle down activities: Our PhD students help your year 9s prepare activities to deliver to year 6 pupils from your feeder schools. We can offer these aimed at science week, and for year 6 transition days in July.
  • We have a limited number of work experience placements available for GCSE and A-level students.
  • Activity Library: links to student blogs, PowerPoint presentations and other resources linked to our outreach activities.

We also get involved with public events, on and off campus, where there is an opportunity to showcase physics to a wider audience. Recent examples are the Nottingham Light Night and the Nation Science and Engineering Week events at Wollaton Hall. Pictures of these and other events can be found on the external site http://www.the-e-online.com/uon.php .

If you would like to take part in any of these activities, or just want some more information, please contact the Outreach Coordinator .

Teacher Support: If you are a teacher and have a question about physics or require material to assist your teaching then please contact the Outreach Coordinator .

We also host the IOP Nottingham Physics Centre .
