Division of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences

The Division of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences is an integrated academic division and NHS department based in the School of Clinical Sciences. The Division undertakes both research and teaching in the University and provides a Clinical Ophthalmology Service.

The Division is well equipped with modern state of the art laboratories and equipment.  Research undertaken in the Division is translational; the main clinical research interest is In Vivo confocal microscopy of eye anatomy and the clinical use of amniotic membrane.  Translational research areas include amniotic membrane characterisation for clinical use, characterisation of limbal epithelial stem cell crypts and age-related and diabetic neovascular eye disease.

The Division of Ophthalmology supports both undergraduate and postgraduate students and values the contribution of these students in enhancing its research reputation and publication record. Over recent years it has successfully attracted funding for a number of postgraduate placements.
