Sports Involvements

Our Centre for Sports Medicine staff, students and graduates are actively involved in looking after sports teams and elite athletes and undertaking research into risk management, injury prevention and injury epidemiology in sports.   

Staff

Tennis

  • Injuries are always an important issue for players during the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament . Professor Mark Batt (Special Professor) provides medical support to players during the Championships at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club during June and July in his capacity as Wimbledon Sports Physician.
  • Professor Mark Batt worked with the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to develop a consensus agreement for the study of injuries and illnesses in tennis (published November 2009 ).

Cricket

  • Dr Nick Peirce (1996 MSc graduate) is the Chief Medical Officer for the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB)  and is responsible for all medical issues related to senior England cricketers.

Students

Many of our current and MSc graduates have provided medical support at a range of sporting events and/or are working with elite sports organisations, including:

  • Dr Gurjit Bhogal (2009 MSc graduate) is the Medical Officer to Worcestershire County Cricket Club and Honorary Medical Officer to Worcester Wolves Basketball Team.
  • Mr Rob Leather (2007 MSc graduate) is the Head Physiotherapist at Leicestershire County Cricket Club.
  • Dr Harjinder Singh (2003 MSc graduate) is the Medical Officer at Leicestershire County Cricket Club.
  • Previous Head of Medical Services at the Rugby Football League (RFL) .
  • Physiotherapist for Shrewsbury Town Football Club.
  • Doctor for Sheffield United Football Club
  • Provided medical cover for Loughborough University Rugby Team at their matches - February/March/April 2010.
  • Provided physiotherapy pitchside cover for football matches at Loughborough Univesity - January/February 2010.
  • Team doctor for the GB archery team at the Junior Archery World Championships in Turkey - October 2008.
  • Team doctor for the England U19 football team at the Final Tournament in the Czech Republic - July 2008.
  • Physiotherapist for the Taiwanese Track and Field team at the 2008 Indoor World Championships in Valencia - March 2008.
  • Team doctor for the GB Hockey Senior Men team at the Championship trophy in Malaysia - December 2007.
  • Part of a team of doctors providing care for the Rugby 7s in Dubai - October/November 2007.
  • Part of a team of doctors providing care for the men's European Water Polo Championship in Manchester - July 2007.
  • Event doctor for the FINA 10km marathon world cup, LEN 5km open water cup and the British 5 and 10km open water championship at the Festival of Open Water Swimming, London - June 2007.
  • Part of a team of doctors and physiotherapists providing care for the Womens Artistic Gymnastics GBR vs FRA (Junior and Espoir Teams) in Avoine, France - June 2007.
  • Part of a team of doctors and physiotherapists providing care for the Great Britain U18 womens ice hockey team at a tournament in Zurich - March 2007.
  • Part of a team of doctors and physiotherapists providing care for the England U16 ice hockey team at a tournament in Holland - March 2007.
  • Part of a team of doctors and physiotherapists providing care for the UK inter-counties Cross Country Championships and World trails at Wollaton Park, Nottingham - March 2007.
  • Part of a team of doctors providing care for the ATP Championships in Dubai - February 2007.
  • Event doctor for the European Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Sheffield - January 2007.
  • Race doctor for the Tour of Britain Professional Cycling Race (UCI 2.1) - August/September 2006.
  • Medical doctor for the elite players of the LTA Nottingham ATP Open, Nottingham Tennis Centre - June 2006.
  • Part of a team of doctors and physiotherapist participating in the Medical Screening programme for the Elite British Gymnastics team at Lilleshall National Sports Centre - June 2006.
  • Match doctor for the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) men's and women's rugby union semi-finals held in Nottingham - April 2006.
  • Tournament Medical Officer for the Under 19 Rugby Union World Championship in Dubai - April 2006.

A number of our MSc graduates provided medical support at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing:

  • Miss A Taylor was part of the medical team for the British Canoe Slalom team.
  • Dr K Brennan was part of a team of doctors providing care for the British Diving team.
  • Dr B Cantonsmith was team doctor for the GB archery team at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games.
  • Mr S C Cheng was a physiotherapist for the Taiwanese Track and Field team training in Berlin in preparation for the Beijing Olympic Games 2008.
