Biography

I am a Clinical Lecturer in Respiratory Medicine in a NIHR funded post. My PhD and subsequent work focused on the population genetics of airways disease and robustness of inference that can been drawn from genetic association studies. I have previously published on replication and meta-analysis in the context of genetic association studies, and was on the organising committee of the ERS School Course on Genetic Approaches in Complex Respiratory Disease. My current research in this field is supported by a Wellcome/AMS grant.

My clinical interests are in adjuncts and improvements to the standard assessment and therapy in difficult to treat obstructive lung disease. I work at the Nottingham City Hospital and the Severe and Brittle Asthma Unit of Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. I am the contact author for the Cochrane review of inspiratory muscle training in COPD and am on the BTS guidelines committee for pulmonary rehabilitation. My current clinical research is supported by Asthma UK.

Recently I have also undertaken research using IT solutions to quantify the activity of on-call junior doctors. This work has been presented at international conferences, forms the basis of ongoing collaborations between the University, NHS and industry, and has now been published.
