Research Summary

I have a program of work exploring how the liver heals in health and disease. Current projects investigate:

  • How the liver regenerates following liver resection in man and how this alters in the presence of parenchymal liver disease (clinicaltrails.gov ref NCT01220986).
  • Molecular signalling in post-resection liver failure.
  • Small-for-size syndrome after major liver resection and strategies to modulate it.
  • The pathophysiology of chemotherapy-induced liver injury, its detection and treatment.

Details of current PhD opportunities can be accessed via this link.

Past Research

I carried out my intercalated honours research with Sir John Savill exploring the regulation of NFκB in glomerulonephritis. Following pre-registration and basic surgical training I undertook my PhD (Scaffolds for Liver Tissue Engineering) as a collaborative project with Professor Kevin Shakesheff (School of Pharmacy, Nottingham) Professor Steve Badylak (McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Pittsburgh) and Professor Brian Rowlands/Mr Ian Beckingham (Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Nottingham). The work was funded by the Wellcome Trust and was awarded a Royal College of Surgeons of England Research Fellowship.
