Biography

Stephen Joseph joined the University of Nottingham in July 2006 as Professor of Psychology, Health & Social Care.

Stephen is co-director with Steve Regel of the Centre for Trauma, Resilience and Growth (CTRG) which is a subsection of the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) and an interdisciplinary research group co-convened by Stephen in the School of Sociology and Social Policy, David Murphy in the School of Education and Nigel Hunt in the Institute for Work, Health and Organisations.

Stephen is an Honorary Consultant Psychologist in Psychotherapy in Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust.

Before joining Nottingham, Stephen was at the University of Warwick (1999-2006) as Senior Lecturer/Reader in Health Psychology and Research Tutor on the Clinical Psychology training programme. Prior to that, he was at the University of Essex (1994-1999) as Lecturer/Senior Lecturer, and the University of Ulster (1991-1994) as lecturer. Stephen studied as an undergraduate at the University of Ulster . His first degree is in Psychology (1983-86). He has a Masters degree in Social Psychology from the London School of Economics (1986-87) and a PhD in Psychology from the Institute of Psychiatry (1988-91) which was a social psychological investigation of emotional processing in survivors of the Herald of Free Enterprise disaster completed under the supervision of Professor William Yule.

Stephen also trained as a person-centred counsellor at Metanoia Psychotherapy Training Institute (1996-2000) and is now a senior practitioner member of the British Psychological Society's Register of Psychologists who specialise in Psychotherapy. Stephen is also a Registered Health Psychologist.

Current Research

Stephen's research interests are now largely concerned with the study of traumatic stress, resilience and growth following adversity, and therapeutic ways of working with people following the experience of trauma and adversity. Stephen has over 150 peer-reviewed publications and has written or edited 9 books. His most recent book is 'What doesn't kill us: The new psychology of posttraumatic growth'.

At Nottingham he is closely involved in the social work programme, teaching person-centred counselling, coordinating the dissertation module, and supervising social work projects. Stephen is also co-director with Steve Regel of the Centre for Trauma, Resilience, and Growth.

Stephen is keen to supervise doctoral research in any of the following areas: social and psychological effects of traumatic events: posttraumatic growth and positive changes following adversity; resilience and vulnerability factors in trauma; school bullying and its effects, childbirth-related trauma: sexual abuse; person-centred therapy: positive psychological approaches to well-being in health and social care.
