Biography

My mainstream research and publications are in the area of immune responses to infection with and vaccination against respiratory viruses in horses, with extended interests in agricultural species and dogs.Understanding the horse's immune responses to natural infection has been critical to the development of new strategies for disease prevention. For example, my group described the locally recirculating mucosal immune system in horses and we exploited this to demonstrate for the first time that intransal vaccination with inactivated virus and mucosal adjuvants induced extremely effective immunity to re-infection with equine influenza virus. Detailed studies with my colleague Dr Julia Kydd (also at SVMS Nottingham) have uniquely identified cellular immune correlates of protection from alphaherpesviruses in horses. This new information has led to rational approaches to new vaccine design. Both of these developments have had significant benefits to the health and welfare of horses.

Other active research areas are allergic immune responses in domestic dogs to housedust mites (Canine Atopic Dermatitis).

In addition to these research areas, my current funding supports the development of immunological reagents specifically for the horse as part of a BBSRC initiative on Combatting Viral Diseases of Livestock (The Immunological Toolbox; http://www.immunologicaltoolbox.co.uk ) . New funding has been won from the EU, FP& Programme currently under contract negotiation. Novel technologies for Surveillance of Emerging and Re-emerging Infections of Wildlife (Acronym = WildTech). Total budget €8.1M, total requested from EU €5.9M, total award to University of Nottingham €1.4M. Co-applicants from Nottingham are Drs Paul Barrow, Lisa Yon, Richard Lea (SVMS) and Mrs S Boardman (EMZS, Twycross Zoo, Clinical Associate of the School). There are 11 international partners mainly in EU and one in Canada. Anticipated start date for the project is Jan/Feb 2009.

Expertise Summary

Research expertise is in a wide range of laboratory and field investigations of immune responses to infectious viruses in animals. Successful in winning many competitive research awards to fund research and support postgraduate (PhD and MSc) students. Director of studies for 10 successful PhD and 3 MSc studnets. Approx 20 years experience of managing research groups and active member of senior management/strategic groups. Regular reviewer of research applications on behalf of the major funding bodies and extenal PhD examiner for universities of Cambridge, London, Edinburgh.
