Campus Network - Network Time Protocol (NTP)

Network Time Protocol (NTP) (RFC1305) is a standard Internet protocol for time synchronisation on distributed computer systems.

NTP Servers in the University of Nottingham
There are four NTP secondary servers in the University:

ntp0
ntp1
ntp2
ntp3.nottingham.ac.uk

Each server synchronises itself with two different off-campus primary servers on JANET for redundancy in case of failure of a primary server, and as a cross-check on the primary servers' accuracy. The primary servers act as reference time sources and use GPS (Global Positioning System) or the national time service transmitter at Rugby.

IS operates three of these (ntp0, ntp2 and ntp3), running the public domain xntpd software.
