Research interests

Roman fortifications and civic planning, and the balance between functional and symbolic/cultural expression.

The archaeology of the Conversion period, c300-800, in the western provinces, and the links and differences between Britain and Mainland Europe.

Recent research grants from various sources, including British Academy and British School of Rome to study (i) development of forum layout in Western provinces and (ii) phenomenon of early churches built on or adjacent to sites of fora.

Has published several monographs and many papers on the archaeology of Lincoln, most recently The Defences of the Lower City, (CBA 1999), c300 pages; editor, The Archaeology of Wigford and the Brayford Pool, (Lincoln Archaeological Studies 2, Oxbow Books, 2001), 360 pages, Book on Roman Lincoln published 2002, co-author of The City by the Pool (Lincoln Research Assessment), 2003, Lincoln History and Guide 2nd edition published 2004 and The Archaeology of the Upper City, forthcoming 2005. Several other volumes in this series are currently at editorial stage. Currently working on Lincoln Urban Assessment with English Heritage.
Other recent papers include chapter on Cities for the Blackwell Companion to Roman Britain (2003), and on 'Urbanization in the Roman North-West provinces' for Washington DC Sackler Colloquium on Early Cities (publication 2006).
Co-Director of the British team working on the Late Roman fortifications and Late Antique occupation, St Bertand de Comminges, S.W. France, 1993-2000: publication in preparation, interim in Journal of Roman Archaeology 11, 1998.
Gave general papers on Britain at the last two International Congresses of Early Christian Archaeology held at Split/Porec (Croatia) and Vienna, 1994 and 1999 respectively. Various other papers on this subject, including that in Antiquite Tardive vol 5, 1996 (Grenoble conference 1994) and 'Early Christian Archaeology in Europe: some recent research', in Archaeology of the Roman Empire: a tribute to the life and works of Professor Barri Jones, BAR Internet Series 940 (ed N J Higham), 2001.
