It is one of only a few MA courses on Medieval archaeology offered in the United Kingdom to cover the archaeology of both the British Isles and adjacent countries of northwest Europe and Scandinavia. MSc Archaeological Materials

This cross-disciplinary course is taught in partnership with the Department of Mechanical Materials and Manufacturing Engineering. The course combines archaeology and science in the investigation of ancient materials and pyrotechnologies. Students who have a largely science-based background, are advised to follow the MSc in Archaeological Materials, which offers more scientific modules and dissertation options. Students who have a largely arts background, are advised to follow the MA in Archaeological Materials. More details about the MSc Archaeological Materials.

MA Archaeological Research

This course is ideal preparation for those wishing to continue to advanced research in archaeology. Compared to other taught masters in the Department, the dissertation forms the larger part of this course and can contribute to subsequent PhD research. Naturally, this course is particularly suitable for those wishing to specialise in an area of staff expertise. More about the MA Archaeological Research.

Course structure

The taught masters courses can be completed one year full-time or two years part-time. Taught at a significantly higher level than in an undergraduate degree, the courses provides students with the range of skills necessary to undertake research, and are an ideal programme for those wishing to pursue further studies at doctoral level as suggested by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).

Postgraduate courses in archaeology

"I am really enjoying my MA – one of my favourite aspects is the regular research seminars, which enable me to discuss my work and get immediate feedback. This process fosters thought and enables me to further progress my research.

In addition to my core work, I have been able to do some tutoring within the Department and have been working on several publishing opportunities."
