Ceramics

Key Staff: Dr Eddy Faber, Dr Gwladys Monteil, Prof Julian Henderson, Dr David Knight, Dr Naomi Sykes, Dr Jane Evans

Archaeological ceramics have been an important area of teaching and research at Nottingham for many years and has developed substantially since 2006. We have a strong, and growing, community of undergraduate, post-graduate, PhD and Post-Doctoral researchers focusing on ceramic production and consumption. Current collaborative research includes ceramics ranging from the Early Neolithic through to the C18th AD in Britain, mainland Europe, the Near East, the Middle East and China.

In addition to major projects focussing on the consumption of Roman pottery in Britain and the production of granodiorite tempered wares in the British East Midlands, our staff and students are involved in a variety of research projects. Click on the project titles below for further information on any of the research projects within the themes.

Featured project

Controlling your temper

Determining the provenance of ceramics is vital to understanding the traditions of production and consumption.

Decorative techniques

Technological investigations of archaeological ceramics are important for reconstructing the many technological choices made during the production process and lead to fuller understandings of the technological style(s) inherent in the behaviour of the potters.
