Department of Archaeology


Nottingham runs a dynamic programme of field projects across the circum-Mediterranean region. Pioneering techniques are being developed in underwater archaeology, survey, bioarchaeology and materials science, to help us investigate some of the big questions concerning man’s occupation of the Mediterranean landscape.

Major themes include:

  • urban and rural Greece (Kouphovouno, Pavlopetri, Halasarna) which links into the work of the world Centre for Spartan and Peloponnesian Studies
  • technology in the ancient Mediterranean (Monte Loreto, Libiola, Glass, Obsidian, Ceramics)
  • man, animals and plants (oasis agriculture, olive and date, dama
