Undergraduate Study

We offer BSc and MSci degrees in Biology, Zoology, Genetics and Human Genetics, and, with colleagues in Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry and Genetics. Research in the biological sciences is the most exciting and rapidly-moving area of science - medical implications of breakthroughs in cell biology and genomics, and ecological issues related to environmental change and its impact on biodiversity, dominate the headlines. Our undergraduate degrees are informed by our research from across the biological sciences, focussing on animals, humans and microbes.  Students have a wide range of options available, allowing choice of a broad biological programme of study or a more specialised degree.  Independent assessments consistently rate the quality of our teaching, and our research, as excellent. We use a range of teaching methods, offering training in transferable skills as well as promoting biological knowledge and understanding. These include field courses and a third-year research project, which allows students to design and carry out their own scientific investigation. A unique feature of our provision is the opportunity to take level 2 and level 3 modules in Biological Imaging and Photography adding to the range of communication skills students can develop.

For some careers, the three-year BSc degree is recommended, but, for students committed to a research career, four-year MSci degrees are available in all our degree subjects.  The fourth year is specifically a training in research skills, including an intensive full-time research project. Through our MSci, those with a strong interest in research may opt to pursue a fourth year of study.

We are committed to widening participation in our degrees. This is emphasised through an extensive outreach programme, and also in admissions. We follow the University of Nottingham's policies on widening participation.
