We are always pleased to report on the success of our Early Career Researchers and PhD students and so we are delighted to pass on congratulations to postgraduate students Dan Foxler and Katherine Bridge, and postdoc Dr Vicky James, who are joint first authors on a recently accepted Nature Cell Biology paper describing the role of LIMD1 in hypoxia.
The LIMD1 protein bridges an association between the prolyl hydroxylases and VHL to repress HIF-1 activity Nature Cell Biology (2012) 14 201-208
LIMD1 is a tumour suppressor protein which has now been found to regulate the cellular response to low oxygen conditions which are found in solid tumours, and as such may have benefits in suppressing tumour growth. Dan, Katherine and Vicky's work, which led to this publication and others, looked at LIMD1 and its interactions with other proteins in the cell, as well as the effects of silencing the protein, and these findings may mean it is universally applicable in a range of cells and/or cancers.
