A formal Ceremony to launch the School of Biomedical Sciences at UNMC was held on 31st January 2012, hosted by Professor Ian Pashby, CEO and Provost of UNMC and Professor Stephen Hill, Head of School of Biomedical Sciences at the Nottingham, UK, campus.
The School of Biomedical Sciences UNMC provides a platform to students who wish to build an independent scientific career working alongside scientists who have extensive experience and knowledge in their field of expertise. Research in the School includes drug discovery, healthcare delivery systems and clinical pharmacology specialised in pharmacovigilance. The School of Biomedical Sciences UNMC co-hosts the Rainforest (tropical) plants research group whose main goals are to set up a collaborative research network, discover, identify and develop useful plant materials for potential use in treating a number of diseases including cancer, infectious diseases and diabetes.
“UNMC first started the School of Pharmacy in 2005. That was the beginning of UNMC expansion into healthcare courses. We are now introducing this School in response to the growing needs and demands in the market,” said Professor Pashby.
“There is a large interest among students in medical disciplines. Many are studying pharmacy, biosciences and biomedical sciences because of the wide range of careers available. This course is also more affordable to self funding students,” Professor Pashby adds.
“The University of Nottingham is favoured in the industry as we are actively involved in research. Our school at the Malaysia campus has strong teaching and research links with the UK campus,” Professor Hill said.
