Biography

I obtained my BPharm (Hons), PhD and PG Certificate in Higher Education from the University of Nottingham. I am a trained pharmacist and hold my professional memberships with the UK General Pharmaceutical Council, Malaysia Pharmacy Board and Singapore Pharmacy Council. Prior to my move to Nottingham in Malaysia, I had worked at the National University Hospital, Agency for Science & Technology, and Health Sciences Authority in Singapore for several years. I was also an Associate Lecturer at the Management Development Institute of Singapore. I am a founding member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (UK) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK).

Recent Publications

I am involved in the teaching of Physiology and Pharmacology modules for students on the Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Biosciences programmes. I also contribute to some teaching in the pharmacy practice and professional modules within the School of Pharmacy. I am the module convener for B31A03 Physiology & Pharmacology 1, B32C03 Physiology & Pharmacology 3 and B13505 Molecular Pharmacology. I am interested to improve student learning experience through different ways of delivering lecture contents and it includes self directed and experiential learning.

Current Research

My current research activities encompass drug discovery and drug safety (pharmacovigilance). I am one of the founding members of the Rainforest Plants Research Group at UNMC. Members of this research group including myself are interested in finding new plant molecules that exhibit potential pharmacological effects for a range of therapeutic applications. My specific interests are in the cytotoxic effects of these natural compounds on bacteria and cancer cells. We have ongoing projects investigating the effects of plant metabolites on reversing the antibiotic resistant of methicillin resistant Staphyloccocus aureus (MRSA). At the other end of the spectrum, I am also interested in improving safe use of medicine through detection and reporting of adverse drug reactions. In particular, we have an ongoing project studying the possible interaction between antimalarials and amino acids in patients and how this interaction may increase the risk of adverse events.

Past Research

I was one of the few investigators working on the elucidation of melatonin receptors in the mammalian vasculature. We managed to characterise the MT1 receptor on the rat tail artery using both the pharmacological and molecular tools. I worked extensively on the organ bath techniques and were well trained in the use of pharmacological tool for in vitro charaterisation of receptors.
