Expertise Summary
I have developed expertise in several areas, primarily revolving around either medical education or neurotoxicology. My neurotoxicology research uses electrophysiological methods to help elucidate mechanisms of action. My interests in medical education include promoting the progressive integration and improvement of Computer Aided Learning and Assessment. I am also a passionate advocate of clinical relevance. My aim is to do all I can to help students fulfil their ambitions to become competent professionals.
Other interests include the philosophy of physiology and the limits of human physiology in extreme environments. Cf. Burr SA (2006) The body in balance: A physio-philosophical view of life. Nottingham University Press, 1st ed. 294 pages.

School:
Extensive teaching of human physiology, basic emergency care, and specialist courses in neurotoxicology, along with some anatomy and pharmacology; to medical, pharmacy and science students.
Manage staff and courses to ensure that the school prioritises and meets its teaching and assessment commitments.
Faculty:
Senior Tutor - responsible for pastoral care, student induction, professional portfolio development, tutor training, judging extenuating circumstances, concerns and fitness to practice cases.
Senior OSCE examiner.
Director of medical sciences degree.
Member of medical admissions committee - interviewer training, reviewing applications and interviewing.
Chair of Faculty Teaching and Learning Group - co-ordinate sharing of best practice across all courses leading to professional registration, securing funding for innovative projects, organising conferences, and publishing in areas of expertise.

Past Research
Past projects include:
1) Monitoring axonal function in response to noxious substances, in optic nerve or spinal dorsal root ganglia, via microelectrode recordings of stimulus-evoked compound action potentials.
2) Biophysical characterisation of voltage-gated chloride ion channels (responsible for mediating neuro-inhibition, regulating cell volume etc)
3) Actions of pyrethroids (neurotoxic pesticides) on voltage-gated chloride ion channels.
4) Actions of chlorotoxin (derived from scorpion venom) on voltage-gated chloride ion channels.
5) Development of clinically relevant websites.
