Funding and Applying

We are delighted that you are thinking of applying for a research degree at the School of Biomedical Sciences. Here’s what to do...

Funding

To apply for a PhD, you will need a scholarship from either the School or the University, research council funding or your own funding.  Whether you are a UK, EU or international student, exploring funding options for a research degree can be complicated.  Thankfully, the University has developed an easy-to-use search facility to help you sift through various sources, such as University scholarships and research councils.  If you are an UK or EU student, you might want to apply for one of our current fully-funded studentship vacancies.

If you can't find what you are looking for or have any questions, please contact us.

If you are applying in response to an advertisement for a specific PhD position then please apply directly to the supervisor with a CV and names of referees. If your application is competitive then you may be invited to interview.

Overseas students
Stage 1
The easiest way to apply is to use the online application form. If you would prefer for us to send you an application in the post or via email, just ask.

Stage 2
You will be asked to send us references and evidence of your qualifications. If you are an overseas student, you will need to show details of your English language qualifications (IELTS, TOEFL or equivalent). We will then send you a code to track your application’s progress online.

Stage 3
Your application will be considered carefully by the postgraduate admissions tutor and potential research supervisors. We will either make a decision immediately or contact you if we need more information.

Stage 4
We will let you know by letter whether your application has been successful or not. The offer of a place will either be conditional or unconditional. Most offers are conditional and the letter will explain why. It may be that we need to see evidence of qualifications or we are waiting to hear from one of your referees. We will also give you details about registering, freshers’ week events and other general University information.

Stage 5
Your PhD supervisor will stay in touch with you about the project and you get the opportunity to visit the lab. Your start date could be any time but for most it will be the beginning of the academic year.

Good luck with your application and if you have any questions, please contact us.
