Postgraduate Research Degrees

Ayesha Maqbool, PhD Student, School of Biomedical Sciences

An incredible place to do research

Every year we welcome some of the world’s brightest postgraduate students to the School of Biomedical Sciences.   Attracted by an excellent reputation and exciting opportunities to work with renowned scientists on groundbreaking projects , our students thrive in a vibrant, multidisciplinary environment at one of the world’s most respected research-led universities.

Programme Structure

The Programme consists of a combination of research skills training provided by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Postgraduate Training Programme, together with supervised independent research, leading to completion of a PhD or a Masters by Research (MRes) thesis.  Our students enjoy expert supervision, extensive training, leading-edge facilities, strong industrial links with major pharma companies and the opportunity to undertake short commercial placements.  The School encourages students to present their own original research as abstracts and oral and/or poster communications within the School and at national and international scientific meetings.

Facilities and Resources

On arrival, all postgraduate students are provided with a laptop computer for use during their period of study at Nottingham.  All portable computers can be wirelessly linked to the School intranet, email and to the WWW, in designated student study rooms and laboratories throughout the School.  The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Graduate Centre provides a social space and careers advice centre, exclusively for postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

Support and Supervision

Our academic staff conduct internationally-recognised research across a wide range of subjects, thus students can expect to receive expert supervision from leaders in the field.  Students have a minimum of two supervisors and meet with their supervisors on a regular basis, both informally and formally to record progress.  Students are assessed through the submission of a First Year Report with an oral examination and a Second Year Report where students write a scientific paper.

Future Positions

This rounded approach ensures our students finish their PhDs not only with highly attuned scientific research skills, but also with a broader commercial understanding that makes them so attractive to employers. Indeed many go on to hold postdoctoral positions here and at other leading institutions such as Harvard, UCLA and Melbourne, or into senior positions at some of the world’s biggest pharma organisations.

The School of Biomedical Sciences has created the perfect conditions to help you realise your full potential. We invite you to find out more about our pioneering research and the incredible opportunities we offer.

In the meantime please have a look at our latest Postgraduate Research Student Newsletter.  If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
