Biochemistry Degree Courses
At Nottingham we offer a range of three- and four-year courses, most of which combine biochemistry with another subject.
BSc (Hons) Biochemistry (C700)
This three-year course gives you a thorough understanding of all aspects of modern biochemistry. Topics include molecular cell biology, genetics, metabolism and biotechnology. The course contains some chemistry in year one but this not as prominent in subsequent years. In year three you’ll carry out a year-long research project, which allows you to develop advanced research skills. The course offers number of career opportunities, including going into research (PhD) as well as employment in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

BSc (Hons) Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine (C741)
Exploring the medical aspects of modern biochemistry, this three-year course invites you to study the mechanisms underlying disease. The first year is similar to BSc (Hons) Biochemistry but features less chemistry and specialises in medical and disease-related aspects of biochemistry. In year three, you’ll complete a year-long medically related research project. This is an ideal course for anyone interested in the medical side of biochemistry.

BSc (Hons) / MSci (Hons) Biochemistry and Biological Chemistry (C720 / C721)
This course focuses on the chemistry of biological molecules (e.g. proteins and DNA) in order to understand how they function. You can choose either the three-year route for the BSc or the four-year MSci.
There is a strong chemistry element throughout both courses and the teaching is split equally between chemistry (run by the School of Chemistry) and biochemistry (run by the School of Biomedical Sciences). Years one and two are common to both courses and students can change from one to the other at any time within the first 16 months. The BSc course offers a broad range of career opportunities in the chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.
The MSci route is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry and includes a year-long research project in year four. It’s ideally suited to anyone considering a career in biochemistry or chemistry research.

BSc (Hons) / MSci (Hons) Biochemistry and Genetics (CC47 / CC4R)
You can choose either the three-year BSc or four-year MSci route. Both of these courses provide a thorough understanding of all aspects of modern biochemistry and genetics. Teaching is equally divided between biochemistry (run by the School of Biomedical Sciences) and genetics (run by the School of Biology). Year four of the MSci involves a substantial research project and is ideally suited to anyone considering a career in biochemistry or molecular genetics. Graduates go on to a wide range of careers in medical or biological research, biotechnology and agriculture.

BSc (Hons) Neuroscience with Biochemistry (B1C7)
This is a three-year degree with an emphasis on neurochemistry. The course has a basic neuroscience content, with additional modules in biochemistry. It offers you an alternative to the BSc Neuroscience (B140) degree and is ideal for those interested in the biochemical workings of the brain. It’s also perfect if you want to go into a neuroscience-related career either within the pharmaceutical industry or academia.
