Medical Degree Course
BMBS Medicine
The School of Biomedical Sciences delivers about 50% of the BMedSci degree (which makes up the first three years of the five-year medicine course) to around 260 students in each year. At the end of the course, you receive a BMBS qualification which enables you to enter preregistration posts and qualify as a doctor registered with the General Medical Council.
The School’s medical teaching group manages the delivery of most of the anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and pharmacology teaching. Many classes in the first two years are taught jointly with pharmacy students and this reinforces the interprofessional partnerships.
In the third year, the School delivers advanced specialist research opportunities for projects investigating brain, heart, blood vessel and muscle function, behaviour, cell signalling, diabetes, cancer, ageing, reproduction, pregnancy and development, clinical anatomy, clinical histology, infections, immunity and parasites, and the action of drugs. These projects use a wide variety of approaches including in silico, in vitro, ex vivo, in vivo, cadaveric dissection, human volunteer, clinical audit, survey and meta-analysis.
