Field Experiments

The University has a 400 ha farm on campus, including 320 ha of arable cropping and 20 ha of organic land. Each year, approximately 10-20 ha of land is dedicated to field experiments for both funded research programmes and to support teaching. The field experiments are managed by a dedicated team of technicians.

Genomics Facilities

The Plant and Crop Sciences Division contains significant facilities for research in plant molecular genetics and genome analysis. The Genomic Services Laboratory provides support to the Division and beyond with a variety of DNA based robotic technologies including PCR, microarraying and single nucleotide polymorphism analysis.

The facility is part of a larger University Post-Genomics Technologies facility based in the Division of Immunology in the School of Molecular Medical Sciences in the Queens Medical Centre adjacent to the University Park campus.

The Nottingham Arabidopsis Stock Centre also has extensive facilities for transcriptomics, genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics.

Imaging Facilities

The Imaging suite in the Plant and Crop Sciences Division has a number of facilities available to Plant and Crop Science researchers including:

Four stereo microscopes, (one with UV light source) and all with digital cameras, two Nikon compound microscopes with UV light sources and digital cameras, Leica compound microscope with UV light source, three confocal microscopes(HeNe & argon lasers), two microtomes for wax and resin sectioning, Bright Cryostat, Canon Scanner.

Equipment is generally available, but can be booked in advance if required. Staff and students from other Divisions may also book time to use the equipment by contacting Morag Whitworth (morag.whitworth@nottingham.ac.uk
