Outreach Activities
Staff in the Plant and Crop Sciences Division contribute to a wide variety of activities which involving outreaching with the wider community outside of the University.
These involve:
Visits to local schools and giving talks on plant biology.
Hosting visting groups from schools and societies.
Staff contributing to Summer Schools and Masterclasses which aim to inspire and enthuse school students in Biosciences and Plant and Crop Sciences.
Staff becoming involved in Community Partnershps and helping with project in the community
The Centre for Plant Integrative Biology (
CPIB ) has linked up with
Conkers, the National Forest visitor attraction near Ashby de la Zouch, to take plant science to the public. Conkers are hosting the BBSRC Plant Evolution exhibition "Questioning evolution?
Evolving answers!", which will be on display throughout February until
12 March, the start of National Science and Engineering Week.
CPIB's Outreach Officer, Susie Lydon, has been running hands-on activities during the school half term and at weekends, in conjunction with the exhibition. Visitors of all ages, from toddlers to grandparents, are learning about what the different parts of plants do, why Mouse Ear Cress is so important, identifying plant fossils, and extracting DNA from a banana using supplies from the local supermarket.
