Several degree courses offered by the School of Biosciences may contain a substantial Plant and Crop Sciences component. These include Plant Science, Applied Biology, Environmental Biology, Crop Science, Agriculture and Biotechnology (all based at Sutton Bonington Campus). Each of the courses may be combined with European Studies to provide a four year degree.
The degree courses listed above all contain a substantial first year component based on fundamental core sciences such as Biological Sciences, Genetics, Biochemistry and Information Technology. Specialist Plant and Crop Science modules are available in all three years of the course and cover a wide range of subjects including Plant and Cell Physiology, Environmental Plant Physiology, Plant Pathology, Plant Biotechnology, Plant Genetic Manipulation, Plant Molecular Biology, Ecology, Applied Crop Science and World Agroecosystems. During the final year of their degree, students gain hands-on research experience by completing an honours research project under the supervision of an academic staff member. For more information on these Undergraduate Research Projects.
After graduation, our students pursue careers in a number of disciplines, including research, sales and marketing, commerce and education.
Plant and Crop Science in Malaysia
The School of Biosciences also has a campus at the University of Nottingham in Malaysia. Currently a BSc degree in Crop Biotechnology is being run there, which ties in closely with plant science modules which are taught at Sutton Bonington in the UK.
Summer research opportunities for undergraduate students
There are several different schemes which allow undergraduate students to gain experience in research into aspects of plant and crop science during the summer of their first and second years. Students who gain such experience find it helps enormously with their subsequent degree and in planning their longer term careers.
