Ambition Nottingham is a free scheme run by the University’s Widening Participation Team for local post-16 students from under-represented backgrounds. The aim is to support entry to Nottingham or other research intensive universities, by offering a range of experiences to help prepare high achieving students from state schools or colleges to progress to higher education.

The first year of activities consists of masterclasses, subject taster days and information workshops, to provide students with an insight into their higher education options. The second year of the scheme provides students with revision, skills and personal development sessions, as well as a supported admissions process to The University of Nottingham.

In January 2012 the School offered a Taster masterclass in biosciences particularly aimed at students interested in finding out about food science, microbiology and agriculture. The theme overall was ‘Milk, from cow to consumer products’ and the afternoon included a tour of the Dairy Centre, manufacturing yoghurt in the Division of Food Sciences own processing plant and a talk on microbiology.

34 students attended the afternoon - all of them agreed that they benefitted from the masterclass and 32 thought they would study higher education in the future. Many commented that they now had a better understanding of what bioscience is and what it involves.
