Speed-Networking Events

Speed-networking is a modern method of making potential research, academic and business contacts by briefly talking to a series of people at an organised event and exchanging contact details.

At Bridging the Gaps Speed-Networking events, 'speed-networkers' interested in forging collaborations with mathematicians, engineers and computer scientists will meet with a series of new contacts for a few minutes each to discuss common interdisciplinary interests and scope for collaborative work.

Where else can you meet so many new contacts in such a short period of time?

Bridging the Gaps Speed-Networking Events will focus on a specific theme, and exposure to researchers sharing similar interests will be maximised through careful planning of the sequence in which ‘speed-networkers’ meet.

A review of the Sensors Speed-Networking Event:-

The Sensors speed-networking event was attended by researchers from a number of schools within the faculty of engineering, along with the schools of Computer Science, Chemistry, Geography and Pharmacy. After initial presentations by senior academics, participants were introduced to the concept of speed-networking, in which each participant was allowed a five minute, focussed discussion with every other participant. These discussions seemed to have revealed some interesting possibilities for collaboration; with some participants discovering that others had either similar interests or knowledge that could potentially be useful in ongoing projects. The event led to at least one ongoing collaboration, involving myself, between the schools of Computer Science, Geography and Electrical Engineering, which is orientated around the use of networks of sensors in forest ecosystems.
