06/03/09: New funding calls announced

Two new funding calls for Feasibility Studies and Interdisciplinary Research Internships are now open, both having a deadline of Thursday April 9th 2009.

 

 

14/01/09: Interdisciplinary Research Showcase

This University-wide Interdisciplinary Research Showcase will be held during National Science and Engineering Week 2009. All are welcome - more details can be found here.

 

 

14/01/09: Wearable Personal Sensing Makefest and Sandpit

Two new events, the Wearable Personal Sensing Makefest and associated £30,000-prizepool Sandpit, have been announced. Registrations for the Makefest and applications for the Sandpit are now being accepted.

20/11/08: Arrival of new Visiting Scholar - Dr. Myerscough

Dr. Mary Myerscough (University of Sydney) arrives on November 27th for 3 weeks to visit Prof. Helen Byrne (School of Mathematical Sciences) as a Bridging the Gaps Visiting Scholar. Click here for more details of Dr. Myerscough's visit and seminar programme.

 

 

10/11/08: Call for participants: Image Analysis Makefest and £30K prize Sandpit

Applications are now being taken for places at the Image Analysis £30K-prizepool Sandpit. Click here for more details of the Sandpit. There will also be an Image Analysis Makefest session, acting as a lead-in to the Sandpit through early-stage discussions and demonstration activities. 16/10/08: Visit of Prof. Hussein Zbib, Washington State University

Prof. Hussein Zbib , Director of the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Washington State University, is visiting Nottingham from October 13th until October 31st. His visit is sponsored by Bridging the Gaps through the Visiting Scholar Programme and his visit will be hosted by Prof. Carlo Sansour of the Faculty of Engineering. The visit will focus on multiscale modelling and Prof. Zbib will be giving a seminar during his visit; click here for further details of his visit.

30/09/08: New Visiting Scholar - Dr. Miroslav Trajkovic, Motorola

Dr. Miroslave Trajkovic, a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Motorola, USA, is visiting Nottingham from September 30th until October 5th. His visit is sponsored by Bridging the Gaps through the Visiting Scholar Programme and his visit will be hosted by dr. Milena Radenkovic of the School of Computer Science. 19/09/08: New BtG Funding Opportunities

Calls for Bridging the Gaps Awards and Visiting Scholarships have been released, with deadlines of November 14th - these include broader discipline awards funded through the 'Bridging the Gaps Plus' programme.

 

 

06/08/08: Seminar series by distinguished visitor, Prof. Tu

Prof. Shan-Tung Tu of the East China University of Science and Technology will be visiting Nottingham as a Bridging the Gaps Visiting Scholar, to be hosted by Dr. Wei Sun of Mechanical, Materials & Manufacturing Engineering. Prof. Tu arrives on August 7th, departing on September 10th and will be giving a series of seminars during his stay.

Seminar series by distinguished visitor, Prof. Baklanov

Prof. Alexander Baklanov of the Danish Meteorological Institute will be visiting Nottingham as a Bridging the Gaps Visiting Scholar, to be hosted by Dr. Ian Lowndes of Chemical & Environmental Engineering. Prof. Baklanov arrives on June 10th, departing on July 2nd and will be giving a series of seminars during his stay.

Funding secured for 'Bridging the Gaps Plus'

Research Strategy Funds have been secured for a 'Bridging the Gaps Plus' project to run in parallel to Bridging the Gaps during the 2008-2009 academic year. The sign-posted themes will be 'Digital Economy' and 'Lifelong Health and Wellbeing', with an expansion to include other relevant disciplines across Nottingham, in addition to mathematics, engineering and computer science.

Winners of Visiting Scholar Programme 2008 announced

£10.5K of funding has been awarded to four Nottingham academics, who will be hosting visitors during 2008. These visitors will bring interdisciplinary expertise and enthusiasm to Nottingham, with all members of the University welcome to attend the seminars they give. During their stays, the visitors will be meeting with academics from around the University, so do get in touch if one of the visitors is of interest to you.

Winners of Bridging the Gaps Awards 2008 announced

£18K of funding has been awarded to a total of 16 Nottingham staff in the recent call of the Bridging the Gaps Awards Programme. These awards are intended as pump-prime funding, with the intention of further developing and prototyping research ideas for submission to external funding bodies.

'Modelling in Energy' Sandpit - £30K prize for CCS research project

Bridging the Gaps has hosted a 'Modelling in Energy' sandpit, with the £30K prize being awarded to a research project focusing on the modelling of the behaviour and flow properties of oxidised impurities in CO2 during the transport phase of post-combustion carbon capture and storage. Congratulations to Trevor Drage, John Billingham, Richard Graham, Hao Liu and Michele Clarke of Nottingham, plus Michael Whitehouse of RWE nPower!

Winners of the Bridging the Gaps Awards Programme 2007

Bridging the Gaps is delighted to announce funding awards to the following staff as part of the Bridging the Gaps Awards Programme:-
  • Dr. Stephen Cox (Maths)
  • Dr. Pragnesh Gajjar (Maths)
  • Dr. Melissa Mather (EEE)

Drs. Cox, Gajjar and Mather will receive pump-prime funding, with the aim of developing their proposed  projects into long-standing research collaborations. Congratulations to them! There will be a further round of this funding programme in the coming months - a call for applications will be released to all Bridging the Gaps schools.

Visiting Scholar Programme - Judges' Decision

Bridging the Gaps financially supported the visit of Prof. Edward Kansa, of the University of California, Davis, USA and Convergent Solutions, hosted by Dr. Herve Morvan of the School of Mechanical, Materials & Manufacturing Engineering at Nottingham this summer.

Bridging the Gaps will also financially support the visit of Prof. Shan-Tung Tu, of East China University of Science & Technology, to be hosted by Dr. Wei Sun of the School of Mechanical, Materials & Manufacturing Engineering at Nottingham in the summer of 2008.

Launch of the Bridging the Gaps Discipline Buddy Scheme

The Discipline Buddy Scheme aims to raise awareness of interdisciplinary research amongst the postgraduate and postdoctoral communities at Nottingham. Discipline Buddies from maths, engineering and computer science will be linked together by the Bridging the Gaps project team and encouraged to visit labs in other disciplines to discover more about their research.
