Deadline for applications: Friday March 6th 2009

Date: Wednesday March 25th 11.30am through to Thursday March 26th 5pm

Venue: 4* hotel in Nottingham

Sandpit Director: Prof. Steve Benford (Computer Science)

Sandpit Facilitators: Dr. Sophie Dale (Bridging the Gaps) and Dr. Eleanor Norris (Mathematical Sciences)

Applications to participate in the Bridging the Gaps ‘Future Applications for Wearable Personal Sensing’ Sandpit are now being accepted. 25 places are available across all interested disciplines. In the event of over-subscription, the judging panel will sift applications and allocate places. Applicants must be members of staff – all levels of staff are welcome to apply, from early career through to professorial level.

During the sandpit, participants will work in interdisciplinary groups to prepare research proposal outlines in response to wearable personal sensing problems. The sandpit is designed to facilitate the synthesis of new interdisciplinary research projects at Nottingham, and therefore all groups will be encouraged to complete their proposal after the sandpit for submission to external funding bodies. Bridging the Gaps will provide a prize pool of £30,000 – the exact manner in which this prize pool will be allocated will be decided at the Wearable Personal Sensing Makefest on Wednesday January 21st (1pm-4.30pm) – participants at the Makefest will be able to contribute to this decision and so sandpit applicants are strongly encouraged to attend.

Based on activities at the successful ‘Modelling in Energy’ and ‘Image Analysis’ sandpits, discussions are likely to continue over evening dinner and therefore participants are encouraged to remain at the venue throughout the sandpit, with accommodation and all meals at the hotel provided courtesy of Bridging the Gaps. There will be leisure facilities available onsite for use by participants. Transport will be provided for those requiring it from each campus prior to the start of the 1st day and returning to the campuses at the end of the 2nd day.

The judging panel will be made up of the sandpit director, the sandpit facilitator and members of the Bridging the Gaps Strategy group.

To apply to attend, please email Sophie Dale at bridgingthegaps at nottingham.ac.uk, no later than Friday March 6th, with the information requested in the following bullet points:-

  • Name, position, school and email address
  • Current research interests relevant to the theme of Wearable Personal Sensing (including brief details of recent grants received).
  • Skills relevant to the theme of Wearable Personal Sensing, particularly if you are new to the theme
  • Details of your research supervisor if you are not an academic member of staff

Successful applicants will be informed after the judging panel have sifted the applications following the deadline. There will be a reserve list drawn up in case of cancellations.

If you have any queries regarding making an application, please contact Dr. Sophie Dale at bridgingthegaps at nottingham.ac.uk or on 0115 84 68923.
