Research Topic:
The Preceptorship of the Novice Nurse

Research Details:
A period of precpetorship is now national policy for novice nurses. Although nurses should be fully autonomous when they qualify, it is recognised that there have been problems of retention and concerns about standards in care when nurse have been 'thrown in at the deep end'. There is a lack of rigorous empirical research that understands how preceptorship supports the professional development of nurses or of the impact of this on the organisation and patient care. My research is based on an ethnographic case study of one hospital preceptorship programme. I hope to understand how learning and socialisation takes place in day- to- day practice and in particular, to understand the opportunities for creativity during this process.
