Research Topic:
Service Parts Logistics Facilities Location and Inventory Decisions for After Sales Service with Multiple Levels

Research Details:
In the proposed PhD research, the focus will be on service parts supply chains for companies that offer various types of service for different customer segments. My objectives are to study the parts supply chain networks in different sectors (automotive, IT, aerospace) and to investigate the mechanisms and policies that firms use to control and execute their after-sales operations with respect to different service levels. In addition, my aim is to build mathematical models, which provide more insight in both the location of stocks, the delineation of service areas, and the inventory levels at the various stocking points. For the latter, I will rely on two sub-branches within the field of Operations Research location analysis and inventory theory. Both sub-disciplines have studied various problems related to service parts logistics. Muckstadt (2005) provides a comprehensive treatment of inventory models for service part supply chains; relevant location models include hierarchical facility location models and covering-location problems (Plastria, 2002). Combining the two decision problems into one integrated model is largely unexplored in the literature, yet it will provide novel insights, especially in terms of capturing the interactions between the two problems. As highlighted by Jayaraman (1999), most of the research dealing with facility location has addressed a single attribute or objective function, which might be insufficient for decision makers. This raises the need to employ multiple objective
