Current Research Activities
I am currently working on the Design Scoreboard project, in collaboration with colleagues from Cambridge Institute for Manufacturing among others. It is funded by the EPSRC and AHRC as part of the design for the 21st century initiative.

The project is based on the assumption that current measurement of R&D and innovation ignores the important contribution of design to firm performance and national competitiveness. Design means different things to different people and the lack of clarity in defining it has proven to be a stumbling block in measuring design performance and demonstrating its importance.

My work on this project has helped to define design in terms of categories of activities which should be measured. This can be used as the basis for capturing design spending, allowing comparison and benchmarking of individual firms and the potential for aggregated national data.
