I read Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Liverpool, followed by Healthcare Policy and Management at the University of Birmingham. After a pre-doc research post at Aston University, I completed my doctorate in Sociology at the University of Nottingham on 'The social construction and control of medical errors'. I then held a post-doctoral research post at the University of Manchester, after which I was appointed Lecturer in Medical Sociology and Associate Professor in Public Management at the University of Nottingham. After a short spell with Warwick university, I am now Professor in Organisational Sociology at Nottingham University Business School, where I am also Director of the Centre for Health Innovation, Leadership & Learning (CHILL), which leads the School's research on health systems improvement. In 2013 I was awarded a Health Foundation Improvement Science Fellow. I am also the Lead for Implementing Evidence and Improvement for NIHR CLAHRC East Midlands, and Deputy Director of Research for the Faculty of Social Science.

Research Interests
Organisational sociology, medical sociology, sociology of the professions, public policy and management, risk and error management

Administrative Roles
Associate Dean for Engagement
Faculty Deputy Director of Research
Director of the Centre for Health Innovation Leadership & Learning (CHILL)
Implementing Evidence and Improvement Lead for NIHR CLARHC East Midlands
Current Research Activities
My research and teaching deals with the reconfiguration and governance of public services, with a particular focus on the changing organisation and management of healthcare services. My primary interest is to understand how new organisational forms and processes interact with institutionalised professional practices, cultures and identities; and how such institutional influences can both stimulate or stymie reform. The conceptual and theoretical foundations of this work involves making connections between medical and organisational sociology, sociology of the professions and public services management. I specialise in the use of ethnographic and mixed method research techniques and am developing methods for complex system ethnographies. I have extensive research leadership and have worked on a number of high profile reform agendas, including: * Patient Safety & Organisational Learning * Quality Assurance & Risk Management * Lean Thinking & Service Redesign * Technological Innovation & Work reconfiguration * Professional Education & Development My work has been supported and funded by the ESRC, NIHR SDO, NIHR HSDR, DoH PRP, PSRP and The Health Foundation. And I have published in leading social science journals such as Social Science and Medicine, Organization Studies, Public Administration Review, Sociology of Health & Illness and Academy of Management Journal.
