Research Topic:
The Diffusion and Transfer of Western Management Education in China

Research Details:
Several studies of note have addressed the issue concerning the diffusion of the American birthed model of the MBA and the extent to which it has maintained homogeneous characteristics as it has penetrated a vast range of disconnected management education markets that are different in heritage, different in terms of educational traditions and have asymmetric business environments from their American counterpart.
Within the Chinese context it is important to consider if the label of the MBA indicates or subscribes a certain model and content, and the extent to which there is homogeneity or divergence within the MBA model used. In essence it will be a question of degree and if changes have occurred how substantial or cosmetic are the changes. Given the very different political and governance environment, cultural norms and traditions, its language and its transitioning economy etc we could expect some degree of localisation of the MBA as being necessary prudent in China. Given the uniqueness of the Chinese context, it will be of great value to view how business schools manage the balance between global and local dynamics and how the desire to seek and attain legitimacy is played out in the international accreditation process.
