Research Topic:
Factors influencing information systems alignment among Chinese SMEs in Ningbo, Zhejiang, PRC.
Research Details:
The research topic is born of 20 years developing systems to bridge the gap between business strategies and the systems used to support them. Accepting that better IS alignment enhances organisational performance, the purpose of the research is to provide information that will help in reducing this gap.
The research focus is on SMEs since these organisations are the birthplace of larger organisations, represent approximately 80% of China's GDP and yet receive relatively little research attention.
Initially, the research will address different approaches taken in the field of study. These differences mainly reflect different approaches to measurement i.e. what to measure and how to measure. Therefore the initial phases of research will examine contemporary research in developed and developing nations and establish a framework and methodology suitable to context.
It is worth noting that many SMEs in China are family based organisations and have a life expectancy averaging 3½ years.
Sources of data will be sought from two main sources 1. SME decision makers – direct contact.
2. Information System implementation organisation client bases.
The first source will enable SME decision makers to express their opinion on alignment and catalysts and inhibitors of change
The second source will enable SME decision makers to be interviewed to find underlying reasons for changes that have recently occurred
Findings from the study will be published in an information booklet and presented at conference to local SME decision makers and local government.
