How this course prepares you for future employment
Studying pharmacy at The University of Nottingham provides you with a firm foundation for your future career. Pharmacy is the degree required by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, allowing fully qualified practitioners to practise as professional pharmacists in the UK. Graduates of The University of Nottingham do especially well in the job market.
In addition to your subject knowledge, the degree equips you with key employability skills such as:
problem-solving and analytical skills
time management and organisational abilities
interpersonal skills – able to empathise and establish relationships with patients and other professional colleagues
In 2011/12 99% of pharmacy graduates, who were available for work or study, gained employment or further study within six months of graduation.
The labour market for pharmacy graduates
The graduate labour market in 2012 although competitive, remained buoyant for pharmacy graduates, despite continued difficulties in the NHS and public sector.
Key employment sectors
The University of Nottingham pharmacy graduates secure professional positions largely within the human health sector, as hospital pharmacists, or the retail sector as community pharmacists. A very small number of graduates choose to pursue careers in the private sector with pharmaceutical companies.
There has been little change in the average graduate salary over the last four years. In 2012, this was calculated at around £19,000. This figure is representative of those offered to graduates entering the pharmacy profession.
My time at the University studying pharmacy was some of the best of my life. The first two years, which set the foundation for the rest of the course, were the toughest. The last two years entailed more self-study, and time to really appreciate the beauty of Nottingham and the campus.
After graduating, I completed my pre-registration training at an independent pharmacy. I felt the experience gained would be all-rounded and beneficial if I ever wanted to set up my own business. I enjoyed every minute of it as I not only learnt a lot, but made many friends for life!
