Working abroad
Many graduates wish to work abroad, yet finding vacancies in other countries usually requires greater effort. You might need to learn about new cultures and recruitment practices or research how job markets have changed while you were away.
You are more likely to find a permanent job abroad once you have some experience in your field. Temporary or non-graduate positions can provide valuable skills, contacts and references. Some multi-nationals operating in the UK recruit graduates for posts abroad, although many expect a period of service here before offering the opportunity to work overseas.
Before applying for a vacancy abroad you should consider the following:
-
Where do you want to work? For how long?
-
Do you speak the language? How proficiently?
-
Do you have the qualifications and experience required?
-
Are your expectations on salary and living conditions realistic?
For further information visit the Prospects section on working abroad as well as our taking a year out pages.
