Work Experience Grant

Have you secured a work placement, but need additional financial support?

The Work Experience Grant has been set up to offer financial support to enable you to undertake work experience activities to enhance your CV and employability.

Did you know?

Last year 64% of applicants received a grant and £74,500 was awarded altogether. The average grant was £373 and over 40% of the grants were for the maximum amount of £500.

Demand is expected to increase this year, so get your application in early.

  1. Read the terms and conditions
  2. Ask the employer to fill in the employer letter
  3. Complete the application form

Am I eligible?

To be eligible for a grant:

  • You must be a registered undergraduate or postgraduate student at the University of Nottingham in the UK
  • You must have secured the work experience yourself (rather than, for example, being placed as part of your course)
  • The work experience must benefit the UK economy; examples include a placement in a UK company

What counts as work experience?

The definition of work experience is broad and incorporates a wide range of work-based learning. For example:

  • Industrial placement
  • Internships - paid and unpaid
  • Law vacation schemes
  • Postgraduate research or teaching
  • Voluntary work
  • Work shadowing

How much is the grant and what does it cover?

You can be awarded up to £500 to cover:

  • Food & accommodation (not normal student residences)
  • Equipment or materials (e.g. hard hat, art materials)
  • Work clothing (maximum £120)
  • Loss of earnings (pay slips required to show lost hours)
  • Other expenses directly related to your work experience

When should I apply?

There are no set deadlines and an application may be made at any time. However, grants cannot be made retrospectively, so you must apply before your placement starts. Case study

Shami Smith-Sandhu

I undertook an eight week internship with Ocado Ltd, working in the business development team of the rapidly growing non-food department in the summer at the end of my second year.

I received a grant of £250, which was mostly used to subsidise living costs during my work experience.

Overall, my placement was a great success, and I found it extremely valuable for my future both personally and professionally. I've learnt a lot more than I ever expected to.

The main thing I’ve gained from my internship is a massive boost in confidence, which will help me to finish my studies and start a hopefully successful career in something I am passionate about.
