This 2012 PhD Summer School on World Heritage at Risk is targeted to PhD researchers (or exceptionally bright postgraduate students who intend to read for a PhD) in their first or second year of studies, who have an interest in the economic dimension of tangible and intangible heritage and in the preservation of heritage at risk.
The event will take place in Villa Rufolo, Ravello, over 6 days during the first half of September 2012 (dates to be confirmed soon).
The Summer School aims to:
-
Create awareness of the challenges involved in multidisciplinary research focusing on heritage conservation/valorization in a world where the issues related to migration, cultural diversity, armed conflicts, climate change risks, and increasing tourism demand pose threats to various heritage expressions.
-
Discuss the role of economic evaluation in cultural heritage preservation, valorisation and management in contemporary cities.
-
Spur debate on the necessity to preserve and valorise cultural heritage in its tangible and intangible expressions, as well as sharing experiences in the field of protection of heritage at risk.
-
Foster multidisciplinary approaches to the conservation and management of world heritage cities and sites, creating a network of world leading scientists from various disciplines.
-
Support the research of bright PhD students interested in working in the urban studies field with a specific focus on the economics of urban conservation and on cultural heritage preservation in a diverse world.
An important overall aim of the PhD school is to identify bright young researchers who might become future leaders in this interdisciplinary field. During the Summer School, established researchers will meet with them to support and encourage their research progress. A selection of papers will be presented by the PhD students during the event.
The international PhD Summer School is articulated into an International Symposium, taking place during the first 2 days and a “training” component, lasting 4 days. The international symposium and the PhD Summer School will see the participation of world experts in cultural economics, tourism, regional science and conservation of tangible and intangible heritage.
