The Centre for English Language Education (CELE) operates on both the University of Nottingham’s international campuses.
At the University of Nottingham, Malaysia campus CELE is part of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. English language provision falls into four key areas. Firstly, the Centre runs the Arts Foundation Programme, which prepares students academically and linguistically for BA programmes in the Faculty of Arts, and other degrees across the campus. In addition to this, the Centre is responsible for an English Language and Study Skills module, which is an integral part of the foundation courses in Business, Engineering and Science.
To provide ongoing support for students at any stage of their academic careers, the Centre also offers Insessional classes and individual support for all students. Finally, students who need to improve their language level before enrolling on their degree can join the pre-sessional classes.
More information on CELE’s activities can be found here .
CELE has been operating at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) since the university first opened in China in 2004. The Centre delivers a Year One Programme for new undergraduate students at the University, and a Pre-Masters Programme for new postgraduate students. The Centre also offers support for students during their degree studies through its Continuing Support Programme .
In addition to these activities, CELE works in conjunction with the University of Nottingham’s School of English Studies to support their work at UNNC. Students commencing degrees with the Division of English Studies in China may then choose to complete their courses with CELE (or with English Studies) in the UK. CELE UNNC also delivers an advanced English Language module for masters students enrolled on postgraduate programmes in Interpreting & Translating.
As well as working with UNNC students, CELE also collaborates with local education providers in Ningbo, running a regular summer programme for local primary and secondary school teachers to help them further develop their English language teaching skills. Collaborative work has also been carried out with a number of Chinese universities in the area of English as the Medium of Instruction (EMI) provision and CELE UNNC has also delivered a number of custom-designed courses in various aspects of English for Specific Purposes.
