Presessional English
If you have not reached the required IELTS or TOEFL score (or recognised equivalent) for the course you wish to study at the University of Nottingham, you can attend a full-time English language course at the University’s Centre for English Language Education (CELE) before registering for your degree.
If you need to make substantial improvements in your English language skills, CELE offers 30 and 40 week programmes throughout the year, which comprise General English and Academic English modules.
If your English score is close to that required for your course of study, you can apply for a shorter programme (between 5 and 20 weeks) and study Academic English & Study Skills modules only.

During the programmes your progress will be regularly assessed to see if you are ready to move from one module to the next. Academic English Level 2 is the final module for the vast majority of students. Academic English Level 1 is your final module if you are planning to go on to a Foundation programme.
At the end of your programme you will be formally assessed and, for most academic programmes, this CELE assessment will be accepted by the University of Nottingham as evidence of your language level. Students going on to the Foundation Certificate in Business or Arts and Social Sciences will be required to take an IELTS or TOEFL test.
Please note that if you are planning to study in the School of Law you will need to do the specialised module for Law students
