Biography

I hold both a PhD and MA in Critical Theory from the University of Nottingham and a Scottish MA in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh. My PhD was entitled 'Articulating Animal Rights: Networks, Activism and Anthropocentrism'. The project used animal rights as a case study for exploring activist uses of online and offline networks to articulate political issues, drawing on actor-network theory and the work of Donna Haraway and Pierre Bourdieu as an analytical framework.

My research interests include: relationships between new information technologies, activism and everyday life; critical internet theories and cultural policy (especially in relation to the digital arts).

I currently convene two core modules of the undergraduate International Media and Communication degree: Communication & Technology (which sets out key debates within the philosophy of technology and examines the impact of new technology on communication, with a focus on digital media and web 2.0 technologies) and Study Skills (a year long module that consolidates the core skills that students require at degree level).

I also teach on the undergraduate modules Communication & Culture (which explores key theories within communications and cultural studies) and Cultures of Everyday Life (which reflects on the politics of the everyday).

At masters level, I convene the module Cultural Studies: Theory and Practice; a core module on the MSc programme Cultural Studies & Entrepreneurship and MA in Cultural Studies. As well as setting out the theories that have had the greatest influence within the field of Cultural Studies, the module relates these theories to contemporary debates in cultural policy.
