Welcome to the Department of Culture, Film and Media

The Department of Culture, Film and Media combines research and teaching in:

  • Film and television studies
  • Mass media and journalism
  • Cultural studies
  • Critical theory. 
As one of the largest departments of its kind in the UK, we offer undergraduate degrees and taught MA, M. Res., M.Phil and PhD 

Our research is innovative and at the forefront of new developments in theory and analysis of modern culture. Research and research supervision in Film and Television Studies is mainly focussed on US film and television, Hollywood Studies, East Asian and global cinema, new media, industrial and audience analysis, and film and television history. Research and supervision in Cultural Studies and Media covers cultural history, cultural policy, visual culture, material culture lifestyle, diaspora, propaganda, war and mass media.  

Our undergraduate degrees in International Media and Communications are taught at Nottingham and at our sister units in China and Malaysia. International Communications can also be combined as joint honours with French, German, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. 

Our single honours Film and Television Studies course offers modules on global film, television, and new media. Film and Television Studies can be taken with a Chinese Studies minor and can also be combined as joint honours with American and Canadian Studies, Cultural Sociology, French, German, Russian and Hispanic Studies.

Congratulations to Tracey Potts

Description
Congratulations to Tracey Potts, a lecturer in the Department of Culture, Film and Media, who has won a Nottingham University student union 'Oscar' in recognition of her pastoral work. Tracey, the department's Senior Tutor, won the award in the category 'Personal Tutor - Difficult Issue'. Awards will be presented at a ceremony on the 27th March 2012.
