  Further to previous communications on the subject of the Apple Mac Trojan virus Flashback , students are asked to ensure their Apple Mac is operating with anti-virus software and up-to-date virus definitions.
   
  Recently, a further 8 devices on the University network have been infected by the virus. These devices have been quarantined, but it is vital that we ensure all other devices are secured against it.
   
  Failure to ensure your device has anti-virus software and critical Apple software updates could mean that it is placed in quarantine.
   
  The Student Network Services intranet portal has software that can scan your device to ensure you have an adequate level of protection.

  - Select Remote scan
  - Select Download scan
  - Follow the on screen instructions.
   
  For those that do not meet required levels of protection, the anti-virus product Sophos is freely available to all current students: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/is/computer/sophos.aspx

• Advice regarding bogus and scam emails

  Over previous months several bogus emails have been sent to students and staff in the attempt to trick individuals into giving up their login usernames, passwords, bank account details and other sensitive information.
  
  These phishing emails often make threats in order to get people to react to giving their information (the threat of closure to an email or logon account for instance).
  To be clear: the University of Nottingham (and other official institutions) will never, ever contact you unsolicited and ask you to confirm your username and password.  We recommend you do not reply or click on any links within emails that appear to be bogus.
